Au pair for Youth: A World of Possibilities
An au pair program is a cultural exchange program where a young person from another country lives with a host family in the USA, providing childcare in exchange for room, board, a small stipend, and the opportunity to learn English and experience American culture.
To be eligible for an au pair program in the USA, you must meet the following criteria:
- Between 18 and 26 years old
- Unmarried and without children
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 200 hours of childcare experience
- Proficient in English
- Valid driver’s license and driving experience.
- Able to commit to a one-year program
- In good physical and mental health.
- Clean criminal record.
Program Structure
- Matching: Au pairs and host families are matched based on their preferences and needs through an authorized au pair agency.
- Visa: The au pair applies for a J-1 visa, which allows them to stay in the USA for up to one year.
- Placement: The au pair moves in with the host family and provides childcare for a maximum of 45 hours per week.
- Cultural Exchange: The au pair is expected to participate in cultural activities and attend college courses.
- Supervision: The au pair agency provides ongoing support and supervision for both the au pair and the host family.
